INFRASTRUCTURE :

In Goa state number of steps have been taken to implement infrastructure development projects. Power, Water and Transport sectors are being concentrated for infrastructure development. The Government has floated the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation for speddy up implementation of infrastructure projects like bridges, bus stands, parking lots, golf course, ropeway project and hospitals.

Goa has :

• A well developed international airport and facilities for charter flights and cargo at Dabolim.

• All weather international harbour and multipurpose general cargo berth and a full-containerised service at Marmugoa.

• National Highways 4A and 17 besides a dense network of metallic roads connecting the state to other parts of the country.

• South-Central Railway and Konkan Railway providing rail links with major cities.

• Excellent ISD/STD networks for communication.

• Abundant power, water and skilled manpower backed by most peaceful industrial relations.

Power Sector : The Goa state has only one 48 MW Naptha based power generation plant in the private sector. The state is mostly dependent on the power allocated from the neigbouring state grids. The present allocated share from central generating station to Goa state is 306 MW. Power consumption in various sectors during 2001-02 is as below :

TRANSPORT SECTOR:

The motor vehicle popultation is Goa as on 31-3-2001 was 3,35,666. Goa has state owned Kadama Transport Corporation. It connects interior villages to urban centres. In Goa state private sector transport services are also available. Goa state has a River Navigation Department, it has 48 ferry boats and 2 motor launches to provide ferry services all over Goa.

EDUCATION :

Goa has Compulsory Education Act to ensure universilazation in education. The teacher pupil ratio in Goa is 1:23, which is ahead of the national average of 1:40. The literacy rate in Goa as per 2001 population census is 82.3 % as against 75.1 % in 1991 census. To improve the standard of education in the state a number of measures have been initiated by the government.

WATER SUPPLY :

Following are major water supply projects in Goa state

1. Opa Water Supply Scheme : It is 40 MLD water treatment plant at Curti near Ponda.

2. 15 MLD Regional Water Supply Scheme at Chandel, Pernem.

3. Sanquelim Water Supply Scheme : It is 40 MLD water treatment plant at Podocem, providing and laying 500mm/400mm dia DI pipes conveying main from Podocem to Assonora for a length of 15 kms and districbution mains for a length of 55 kms covering Poriem, Honda, Pissurlem, Cudnem, Surla, Velguem, Pale Mencurem, Sal  and Latabarcem villages in Bicholim and Sattari talukas.

4. Assonora Water Supply Scheme : This project is of 5000 cu.m. MBR at Assonora service reservoir, providing and laying 1100 mm dia M.S. 1000/900/750 mm dia DI pipes conveying main for a length of 24 kms from Assonora to Porvorim.

5. Salaulim Water Supply Scheme : The project comprises construction of 10,000 cu.m. MBR and allied compnenet works at an estimated cost of Rs.11.50 crore. Construction of 10,000 cu.m. MBR, 1500 cu.m. RCC sump, pump house, 1000 mm dia feeder mains and 700 mm dia rising mains have been completed.

TOURISM :

Tourism is a major economic activity of Goa. Tourism has made substantial contribution to the economic development of the state in terms of employment generation, intra sector competition and foreign exchange. Goa receives nearly 1.3 million tourists every year, which is equivalent to the population of the state. Goa Tourism Development Corporation has setup GIS based kiosks at 11 locations for tourist information. GTDC is doing professional growth of this industry.
